How do I use the Red Rubbish Bin?

The red rubbish bin is for the disposal of household rubbish. Simply place rubbish in the red bin and put it out on the kerbside by 7.30am on your collection day. The rubbish bin is emptied every week.

What goes in the red rubbish bin?

You can put the following items into your rubbish bin for disposal:

  • Household rubbish
  • Food scraps and wrappings
  • Dirty paper, tissues, paper towels
  • Nappies and sanitary products
  • Cold ashes
  • Packaging
  • Styrofoam
  • Broken toys, clothing
  • Dirty or contaminated plastic, polystyrene, tin/steel/aluminium cans
  • Broken glass (please wrap in newspaper)

What CANNOT go in the red rubbish bin?

See the A to Z Waste Guide for how to correctly dispose of these materials.

What happens to the rubbish?

The red rubbish bins are emptied into the collection truck which delivers it to the Invercargill Waste Transfer Station.  At the Transfer Station the rubbish is removed from the truck and compacted into 'bulk-haulage' trailers and transported to the Southland Regional Landfill.  The Southland Regional Landfill is owned and operated by A.B. Lime and is located at Kings Bend, Winton.  At the landfill the rubbish is pushed into an open "cell" and buried.
