School Holiday Programme

The Love Food Hate Waste Holiday Programme runs during school holiday periods. This programme offers a unique, fun and safe learning experience for tamariki (children) ages 8 to 12 years.

Every year the average Murihiku whanau (Southland family) throws away up to $563 worth of kai (food) and drink.  Some of this is made up of things like peelings, cores and bones, but the majority is, or once was, perfectly good kai.  The kai we throw away is a huge waste of energy, wai (water) and packaging used in its production, transportation and storage.

Facilitated by Koha Kai the programme is designed to highlight kaitiakitanaga (guardianship and protection) of our environment through learning to reduce our food waste.  Tamariki will have fun learning about:

  • Maara kai vegetable gardening and composting
  • The journey of kai, from farm to table
  • Prepare and cook healthy kai, and
  • Brush up on their reduce, reuse and recycle habits.

The Love Food Hate Waste Holiday Programme is held at Te Wharekura O Arowhenua, 734 Tweed Street Invercargill.
