Protect Oreti Beach
Thank you to the people and organisations in our community who have participated in the Protect Oreti Beach campaign during summer 2009/10. Staff volunteers from the ten organisations involved in the Protect Oreti Beach campaign came to do their bit on January 21 and took part in a community clean up at the beach.
Community partners in the Protect Oreti Beach campaign are:
Invercargill City Council, Invercargill Licensing Trust, Community Trust of Southland, Department of Conservation, Environment Southland, New Zealand Police, Public Health South, Southland Land Rovers Club, Te Ao Marama and The Southland Times.
During the campaign we have:
• Removed 3.3 tonnes of rubbish
• Raised awareness of the damage vehicles do to our sand dunes
• Promoted road safety on Oreti Beach
• Run regular patrols of the beach
• Begun work on upgrading beach signage
The summer campaign may be over but our work to Protect Oreti Beach will continue.
“Ordinary Southlanders can do their bit too. If you see rubbish at the beach and can safely pick it up, then please do. Every bit helps,” Invercargill City Councillor Alan Dennis said.
Thank you for your support.
